Former SA all-rounder Lance Klusener appointed to coach Tripura cricket team

Tripura cricket association announced on Wednesday that former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener will take over as the head coach for the forthcoming season.

According to persons with knowledge of the situation, Klusener would fly to Agartala the next day after arriving in Kolkata on June 2.

The Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) advertised for coaches in March and received several responses from former players and coaches. Dav Whatmore and Klusener, a former Australian cricketer and Sri Lankan coach, were chosen by the TCA.

The 51-year-old has been hired on a 100-day contract basis.

“Our discussion with Dav was in progress but he could not make it due to some personal matter. Later, we spoke to Klusener who agreed to 100 days (with us) as he has other assignments in Afghanistan and South Africa,” said TCA vice president Timir Chanda.

“Klusener said that he wants to share his experience in cricket with every cricket team. It’s a great opportunity for them to know and get experience from him,” said Chanda.

Former South African all-rounder Klusener is now the Durban Super Giants’ coach in the SA20 competition. Prior to this, he served as the batting coach for both Zimbabwe and the national cricket team of his own country. Klusener has had several responsibilities internationally in addition to serving as Afghanistan’s head coach for the 2021 T20 World Cup. Kulsener served as Delhi’s consulting coach in the 2018–19 Indian Premier League campaign.

Klusener was chosen as the 1999 ODI World Cup’s Player of the Tournament after turning up an exceptional performance. For the Proteas, Klusener has played in 220 games in ODIs and Tests, scoring 5482 runs and claiming 272 wickets. Tripura is ready to play a different style of cricket now that the 51-year-old South African all-rounder has been hired.

This week, Klusener is anticipated to take over. The Tripura Cricket Board is also modernising its facilities for cricketers and building new infrastructure. The management is hiring former cricket players. For the purpose of choosing cricket players, public trials are being held.

Officials claim that in addition to working with the Ranji team, Kulsener will also coach the under-15, under-16, and under-19 men’s and women’s teams.
