Erling Haaland Scores Five UCL Goals, Breaks Messi’s Record

Manchester City star, Erling Haaland has made a brand new record in the Champions League after he scored five times in his clash against RB Leipzig earlier this Wednesday.

Haaland scores five goals against Leipzig

Haaland has now scored more goals in a single match of second leg against Leipzig than the likes of Lionel Messi (4), Karim Benzema, Son Heung-Min and Kai Havertz (2) have this season in the Champions League.

City was awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute after a hand-ball by Benjamin Henrichs was confirmed after the VAR check, and Haaland is not the one to miss such a golden opportunity.

Haaland received another golden chance right in his lap after Kevin De Bruyne’s shot hit the post and Haaland swiftly converted the rebound into a goal. Haaland struck again at the 45+2 minutes right before the half time to complete an easy hat-trick.

City’s corner fell again in the foot of Haaland the undefeated despite a few saves by Blaswish, which he successfully netted into the goal again in the second half of the match at the 53rd minute. It was not long before he scored his fifth a few minutes later in the 57th minute and completed his 5 goals.

What records did Erling Haaland break?

Haaland has reached a dreamy 30-goal tally within 25 games played, and it is fastest by any play in the history of Premier League. Haaland also became the youngest player to ever do so at the age of 22 years.

Previously the first record had been held by Ruud van Nistelrooy (34 games), while the later record had been in the name of the legendary Lionel Messi (23-year-old at that time).

Haaland’s list of records that he shattered does not end here because he also became only the third ever player to have scored five total goals in a single Champions League match. The first two being Luiz Adriano in 2014 and Lionel Messi in 2012.

How many goals has Haaland scored for Manchester City?

Haaland overall has scored 39 total goals for the sky blues across all tournaments this season.

Erling Haaland has also joined the likes of legendary Lionel Messi, becoming one of the only two players in history to have successfully scored five goals in the knockout stages of Champions League.

After scoring five goals against Leipzig, he has now also broken the record for most goals in a season held by Tommy Johnson, who had 38 goals back in 1928-29 season.

What records does Haaland have?

Erling Haaland has also become the first Premier League player to have scored five total hat-tricks in a single season ever since Harry Kane achieved the feat back in 2016-17.

His list of magnificent records only begun considering the season is yet to end and Haaland is only 22, and has already scored more Champions League hat-tricks (2) than legends like Thierry Henry, Ronaldo, and Wayne Rooney.
