Chetan Sharma reappointed as Chairman of BCCI’s New Selection Committee

After over a month of drama and suspense created by BCCI over the post of selection committee we finally have a verdict and it is something not everyone will like.

According to ESPNcrickinfo, Chetan Sharma has been reelected and reappointed at the post of Chairman of BCCI’s national men’s selection committee. However, this time he is set to have new selectors under his waing.

Chetan Sharma remains Chairman of Selection Committee

BCCI in November 2022 sacked it’s existing Selection Committee post India’s T20I world cup debacle. Following which they put out an invitation for new and fresh faces for the role of committee. And the names that surfaced for the job were very interesting.

However, the verdict of the selection committee is finally here. And the changes are not very potent.

Chetan Sharma, who had not completed his previous tenure is back in the house and will resume his position as well. This is almost like he had never left, because when the new selection committee was being formed, Sharma was busy scouting players from Ranji Trophy.

This was due to a rule that BCCI has for selectors to perform scouting until a new committee is formed. Hence, Chetan Sharma never left the position in general.

Now, he is back in the office and will have new people under him. Sharma will have Shiv Sunder Das, Salil Ankola, Subroto Banerjee and S Sharath as colleagues in the new panel.

His appointment was not a big surprise given that he was a part of the review meeting held by BCCI last week. In the meeting to set a road-map for India team’s coming campaign of 2023 ODI World Cup, Sharma was spotted with Rahul Dravid and other designated personells like Rohit Sharma and VVS Laxman.

The Cricket Advisory Committee conducted interviews on 1st of January has elected a panel with a cumulative experience of 48 Tests and 94 ODIs. ESPN reports, “Chetan and Das have both played 23 Tests each, while Ankola and Banerjee played one each. Chetan also played 65 ODIs; Ankola, Banerjee and Das played 20, six and four apiece. Sharath, a domestic great who played 139 first-class matches and scored 8700 runs in the format at an average of 51.17, never played for India.”

After the appointment of requisite personals BCCI also released a statement that read, “The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape undertook an extensive process for selecting members of the All-India Senior Selection Committee. The Board received around 600 applications following its advertisement for the five posts issued on its official website on 18th November 2022.

“Upon due deliberation and careful consideration, the CAC shortlisted 11 individuals for personal interviews. Based on the interviews, the Committee has recommended the following candidates for the Senior Men’s National Selection Committee,” it added.
