In a historic shift, chess legend Viswanathan Anand’s reign as India’s top-ranked chess player has come to an end after an astonishing 37-year run. D Gukesh, officially claimed the number one spot in the Indian chess rankings. Anand opens up about this momentous change and his future plans in an exclusive interview with Champions Chess Tour.

An Unexpected Turn of Events

Viswanathan Anand, the first Grandmaster from India and a chess icon worldwide, admitted that the shift in rankings brought about mixed emotions. While he was somewhat relieved that the inevitable had finally happened, he also expressed feeling a sense of novelty and change in the air.

For nearly four decades, Anand held his position as India’s top-ranked chess player. His journey began in January 1987, and he climbed to the world’s top 10 in July 1991, remaining unrivaled in Indian chess. Despite a brief moment in March 2016 when Pentala Harikrishna temporarily overtook him in live rankings, Anand’s dominance persisted until now.

D Gukesh, a student of the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy, has officially succeeded Anand as India’s number one chess player and ranks 8th globally. Anand expressed immense pride in Gukesh’s achievement and acknowledged his role in offering guidance and interacting with the rising chess talent.

Anand’s Future Plans

Reflecting on his future in competitive chess, Anand emphasized that while he has some chess left in him, he won’t prolong his career indefinitely. With the weight of maintaining his top-ranking status now lifted, Anand looks forward to exploring new opportunities and endeavors.

Anand’s career has been marked by unwavering dedication to securing his top position, an unprecedented feat in Indian sports. With Gukesh taking the mantle, Anand’s passion for chess can now find its proper place, allowing him to embrace new challenges and experiences.
