Brazil Declares 3-Day National Mourning For Football Legend Pele

Brazil has declared a three-day national mourning period on Thursday over the death of the greatest ever football legend Pele, according to Brazilian news portals after they cited a decree which was signed by outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

According to the reports, the decree was signed by Bolsonaro and it read,

“Official mourning is declared throughout the country, for a period of 3 days, counted from the date of publication of this Decree, as a sign of regret for the death of edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, a former football player.”

Pele had earlier passed away on Thursday at the old age of 82 after losing his long battle with cancer.

Jair Bolsonaro had also tweeted earlier that, “With regret the passing of a man, who through football, took the name of Brazil to the world. He turned football into art and joy. May God confort your family and welcome you into his infinite mercy.”

Pele’s funeral will reportedly be taking place on Monday, January 2nd according to the sources citing official statements released by Santos Futebol Clube. His body is going to be laid to rest at Urbano Caldeira Stadium in Vila Belmiro located in Santos.

It is being expected to start at sharp 10am on Monday and would be continueing until 10am on Tuesday, that is, January 3rd in local time. It will be followed by a parade which will be hld through the streets of Santos.

The Albert Einstein Hospital, where Pele took his last breath in the end-of-life care, confirmed in a medical bulletin that Pele died exactly at 3:27 pm and the death was due to multiple organ failure as a result of the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous clinical condition.
