Rui Costa, Benfica president has revealed Enzo Fernandez’s questionable behavior during his transfer process, almost forcing out his way from the club by refusing to play at all if the move was not sanctioned.

Costa confirmed earlier that he was had made sure of the situations under which Fernandez would remain at the club until the summer 2023, including ensuring that the Argentine would earn the same amount of salary that he was offered by the Blues.

However, the world cup winner was adamant on leaving Lisbon this very season, according to some reports, he even threated the club that he would return back to Argentina and would never step on pitch for Benfica again.

Costa said that after Fernandez had taken it so too far, it became impossible to have him in the squad and hence the Benfica chief was bound to accept the offer of 106million fee made by Chelsea without any other option.

Benfica chief earlier spoke at a press conference where he said that Enzo Fernandez did not want to stay at Benfica and didn’t give them any chance. He also said that he tried his best and that he was sad but he wasn’t going to cry for a player who did not want to stay.

Rui Costa unmasks Fernandez unruly behavior

Costa said that when Chelsea arrived, it became really impossible to change his mind. Despite them finding an agreement on the deadline day of the January window to sell Fernandez in the summer, but he had his mind prepared that he did not want to stay.

Enzo Fernandez apparently was unrelenting from the moment he realized that Chelsea was willing to pay the value of his clause. Even after efforts and insisting from Benfica, he did not show any openness of continuing Benfica said Costa.

According to Costa, everything changed when he realized that his hope of Enzo wanting to fight for the championship title with Benfica would never come true because Enzo didn’t want to. At that moment Costa said he didn’t want him to wear the Benfica shirt ever again.

“A player who even with the possibility of not losing a Euro and with a secure Chelsea contract, does not want to continue, could never stay at Benfica. This player could no longer enter the locker room,” expressed Costa.
