Argentina 2-2 South Africa; Argentina Comes From Two Goals Behind to Draw Africans

As the saga of 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup progresses towards the knockout stages of the tournament, group stage matches have started to heat up because of the do-or-die nature of the games.

South Africa fail to register first ever win in Women’s world cup

In the new Group G clash where Argentina’s national team faced off with South Africa in the Forsyth Barr Stadium, the Argentinians came from behind to equalize a two-goal difference that South Africa had built up to snatch one point from the draw.

The Group G nations collided which trying to find chances and openings in eachother’s defense as  both teams were keen to conquer their first victories of the competition so far.

The South Africans faced the rotten side of luck in the first half of the game itself after their skipper, Refiloe Jane had been taken off the pitch owing to an injury within the starting 30 minutes of the match.

The presence of their captain wouldn’t hurt the South African team as much as it would seem, all thanks to Linda Motlhalo who broke through the Argentinian defense and netted the ball right past the goalkeeper on the 30th minute of the game, giving a one-goal lead to South Africa.

After the half time break, the South American tried to find chances for an equalizer; however, the Africans being unstoppable did not stop pressing their threat and kept Argentina on the bay.

The threat on the Argentinian goal was maintained for most of the second half and finally the South Africans found the back of the net past a stunned goalkeeper Correa for the second time in the span of 90 minutes and with that Kgatlana provided a two-goal difference to her team in the 66th minute.

The match looked in favour of South Africa by a landslide; however, Argentina have always been fighters in every sphere and it was Sophia Braun who gave the needed push to her country with the first goal for the Argentinians in the match at the late 74th minute of the match.

In a dramatic turning of tables, Argentina fought their way into maintaining themselves in the running for the Cup as it was Romina Nunez who scored a late goal to equalize for her nation and that is how South Africa bottled up an on-lap victory by losing their two-goal lead.

Nunez’s close-range header lighted up the Forsyth Barr Stadium as Argentina’s comeback into the match looked impossible. With that South Africa’s wishes of winning their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup match remained only a wish.
