Adelaide International 1: Novak Djokovic beats Sebastian Korda 2-1 in final despite injury scare

Novak Djokovic is in Australia and he has announced his arrival by winning the Adelaide title on Sunday against Sebastian Korda of America.

What was a better way for Djokovic to announce his return thatn winning a title itself. And he did just that on Sunday by defeating Korda despite an injury scare.

Post his semi-final win over Russian Medvedev, Djokovic has complained about tight hamstring. This news had scared the Open organisers given the number of absentees already. However, the former world number 1 showed no signs of injury during his final against Korda.

In fact, it was a riveting encounter player between two shear professionals.

It was Korda who had the earlier advantage in the game. He was able to beat Djokovic 6-7 in the first set. And had him backed up in a corner with match point in his favour at 5-6.

Things didn’t go according to plan though, and Korda lost the point to Novak. The Serbian then dragged the game to tie breaker yet again only to win it this time. The second set lasted till 51 minutes as both players were relentless.

Djokovic makes remarkable comeback to win the title

With the match tied at 1-1, Novak Djokovic knew that it was his game to lose.

The Serbian gave it his everything to win the final set by 6-4, to clinch the title in a final that lasted for 3 hours and 9 minutes.

Talking about his great matchup against Korda, Novak said, “I hope everyone enjoyed the show tonight, it’s been an amazing week… Seb’s had an amazing tournament and put in an amazing effort today. I think he was closer to victory at times today than I was. It was only a couple of shots, a couple of points.”

This victory will be a huge boost for Novak Djokovic who is yet to lose a single match Down Under. Currently he holds 6 Australian Open Titles and will be the top contender to the title against Rafael Nadal, the defending champion.
