Yuzvendra Chahal set to surpass Jasprit Bumrah to become first Indian to achieve stunning T20I bowling record

Yuzvendra Chahal, despite frequently being benched for important series and tournaments, has been one of India’s most effective bowlers in T20I cricket. In India’s maiden Twenty20 match against the West Indies, in which they lost by four runs, Chahal claimed two wickets, bringing his career total to 93.

Chahal, who leads India in T20 international wickets, is currently seven wickets away from being the first player from his nation to reach 100 T20 wickets. If Chahal succeeds in breaking the record set by Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, Mark Adair, and Shahid Afridi during the current five-match series against the West Indies, he will have surpassed theirs.

On the list of Indian players who have taken wickets in this format, Chahal essentially stands alone. Following him is the quick bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has 90 wickets but now doesn’t seem to be part of the international cricket plan. Jasprit Bumrah follows on 70 wickets, followed by Ravichandran Ashwin, who also doesn’t appear to be in the running for the shortest format. Hardik Pandya, the captain of India, is fifth on 70. With 322 scalps, Chahal also has the most wickets among all Indians in T20 cricket.

With 140 wickets, Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan now holds the record for most T20 international wickets ever. With 134 wickets, Tim Southee of New Zealand is second, while Rashid Khan of Afghanistan is third with 130.

On a tour to Zimbabwe in June 2016, Chahal made his T20I debut. In the very following series he participated in, he recorded figures of 6/25 and assisted Idnia to a 75-run victory over England in February 2017. This all but guaranteed his position in the team. For the first time in a T20 international game, an Indian bowler took more than four wickets. Chahal made his ODI debut during the 2016 tour of Zimbabwe and has since recorded 121 wickets in 72 matches.
