You’ve just got to move on: England’s Harry Brook looking to move on after ODI World Cup 2023 omission

England batter Harry Brook is looking to move on from the disappointment of not making it to the provisional squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

Brook was omitted from the England squad as Ben Stokes performed a retirement U-turn and was included in the 18-member contingent for the tournament in India. The 24-year-old has been in stunning form for England in the Test and T20I formats over the past a year but has only played three ODIs in his career till now.

In an interview with Cricinfo, Brook acknowledged his disappointment at not being selected for the team but added that he has stopped dwelling on it and is trying to move on. The young hitter said that Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott told him that Stokes would take his spot.

“Obviously it’s disappointing”: Harry Brook reacts after provisional World Cup squad snub

With the England Test captain returning to the lineup, Brook claimed he couldn’t really grumble about the decision.

“Obviously it’s disappointing but I can’t do anything about it now,” Brook said. “You’ve just got to move on. I’m trying not to think about it anymore.”

“I’ve not had many conversations with Matthew [Mott] or Jos [Buttler]. They said with Stokesy coming back, I was probably going to miss out this time. He is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t really complain, can I?”

“I feel like I’m playing well at the minute and feel I could potentially add value to the team. [But] there’s always something more you could do,” said Brook.

Brook also admitted that not playing a lot of ODI cricket for Yorkshire or England may have hindered his chances of making it to the squad.

“I haven’t had much opportunity to play one-day cricket, whether that be for Yorkshire or England,” Brook said, “and although I’ve played a lot of T20 cricket, I don’t know if I’ve done as well as I have in the past in the last six months, so that might have had an effect.”

Why is Harry Brook not in the team?

While we are no selectors or critics of any player, we would like to state that Harry Brook is yet to get the hang of One Day cricket. Nonetheless, the 24-year-old batter has made a huge mark in Test cricket.

In his Test career to date, Harry Brook has played 12 matches to date in his Test career and has scored 1,181 runs, with an average of 62. Harry Brook has hit 141 fours and 23 sixes in his Test career. On Jul 2023, he played his recent Test match against Australia at The Kia Oval, London, England, scoring 85 runs off 91 balls.

If we take a look at his ODI career, he has only played 3 matches to date in his ODI career and has scored 86 runs, with an average of 29. Brook has hit 8 fours and 4 sixes in his ODI career. One of his recent ODI matches took place in Feb 2023 at The Oval, Kimberley, Kimberley, South Africa, where he contributed 6 runs off 9 balls.

Consequently, the stats justify England Cricket Board’s decision to not consider Brook for the upcoming marquee tournament. Yet, one can claim that with the kind of game the English batter displays in the longest format of the game, he can soon make his ODI journey on high.
