WTC Final 2023: India, Australia and Shubman Gill fined for criticism of TV umpire’s decision

Shubman Gill fined: The Indian opener received a 15% match fee fine for objecting to the TV umpire’s call during the World Test Championship Final against Australia. For sustaining a sluggish over-rate, India has been penalised its whole match cost, and Australia has had 80% of their money deducted.

When Gill edged Scott Boland low to the left of the gully as India was chasing 444 runs in the second innings, Cameron Green dove to collect the ball incredibly close to the ground. Gill was on 18. In accordance with the revised policy, the on-field umpires approached the third umpire without giving a soft signal when Gill didn’t immediately leave. Third umpire Richard Kettleborough looked at the replay from various angles before ruling it out.

Gill then posted a screenshot of a zoomed-in front-on image of Green making the grab on Twitter along with a few face-palm and magnifying-glass emojis. He afterwards published an Instagram story with clapping-hand emojis.

According to Article 2.7, “public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match,” the ICC accused him of violating this provision. There was no need for an official hearing because Gill agreed to the punishment.

India was determined to be five overs short of the objective in terms of slow over-rate, whereas Australia was determined to be four overs short after taking time allowances into account.

India suffered a 209-run defeat in their second straight WTC final after losing seven wickets on the fifth morning. Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, too expressed his unhappiness with the procedure used to exclude Gill during the post-game news conference on Sunday.

“I just felt disappointed. I mean, the third umpire should have seen a little more replays, a little more of, you know, how the catch has been held,” Rohit had said.

“I think it was three or four times he saw, and he was convinced with it. It’s not about whether it was given out or not out, you need to have a proper and clear information about anything. It’s just not about the catch, it can be about anything.”

Rohit concluded
