WPL 2023 No-ball Controversy: Shafali Verma’s dismissal in final strikes controversy; DC Skipper Meg Lanning furious with umpire

WPL 2023 No-ball Controversy: A major umpiring controversy hit the first-ever final of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in only the second over of the game after in-form Mumbai Indians pacer Issy Wong dismissed explosive Delhi Capitals Shafali Verma.

Shafali Verma got off to a breezy start before she miscued a waist-high delivery to the fielder. Delhi Capitals took a DRS for the no-ball. Despite the evidence, the umpires ruled in favour of Issy Wong leaving DC skipper Meg Lanning furious.

WPL 2023 No-ball Controversy: Shafali Verma’s dismissal in final strikes controversy

It started off with Shafali lofting last game’s hattrick-star for a six down long on and a slash through point for four on the second. Chaos would ensue on the third and Verma miscued a high full toss straight to the fielder at backward point. Just as the Mumbai players ran to celebrate the wicket, Shafali and her captain at the non-striker’s end, Meg Lanning called for a possible waist high no-ball.

Upon a review, the third umpire made a controversial choice as it was given out. The decision divided opinions as the ball tracking showed the ball going above the stumps while Shafali was not even in a crouching position. The ball appeared to be just about on Shafali’s waist, and the decision was a borderline call.

DC skipper Meg Lanning was evidently fuming at the decision and lost her cool at the umpire. She was seen having a heated argument over the decision as Shafali walked back towards the dressing room.

What the rule states?

The MCC laws on the waist high no ball under match clause 41.7 stats, “Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease, is unfair.”
