WPL 2023 Eliminator: Mumbai Indians thrashes UP Warriarz by 72 runs to book the Final’s spot
Mumbai Indians defeated UP Warriorz by 72 runs in the Eliminator fixture of WPL 2023, at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Friday.
Isabelle Wong (4/15) recorded the first hat-trick of the Women’s Premier League 2023 after Nat Sciver-Brunt’s brutal 38-ball 72 as Mumbai Indians sealed a spot in the final of the WPL’s inaugural edition.
MI beat UP Warriorz to reach WPL Final
Chasing a target of 183 runs, UPW were bowled out for 110 in 17.4 overs. Kiran Navgire smacked 43 runs off 27 balls in an otherwise poor outing for UPW. Meanwhile, Issy Wong grabbed four wickets, including a hat-trick and Saika Ishaque took two dismissals.
Setting a target of 183 runs, MI reached 182/4 in 20 overs, courtesy of an unbeaten knock of 72 runs off 38 balls by Nat Sciver-Brunt. Meanwhile, Sophie Ecclestone bagged two wickets for UP Warriorz and leads the Purple Cap race. The win also helped MI enter the final, where they will face Delhi Capitals.
That was as comprehensive a performance from the Mumbai Indians as it could get! Harmanpreet Kaur and Co did stutter towards the business end of the league stage, suffering back-to-back losses against UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals, but managed to rediscover their dominant touch tonight.
Although one does wonder how the game would pan out had Sophie Ecclestone not dropped Sciver-Brunt on 6 earlier in the evening.
After winning the eliminator match by a big margin, MI will now face Delhi Capitals in the summit clash of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League. The final is scheduled to take place on Sunday (March 26) at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
