World Cup 2023: Angelo Mathews becomes the first cricketer in history to be out on ‘timed out’

In latest cricket update, Veteran batter Angelo Mathews found himself etched in the record books for an unfortunate reason during match No. 38 of the ICC World Cup 2023 between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In an unprecedented turn of events, Mathews was declared out without facing a single ball, as umpire Marais Erasmus upheld Bangladesh’s appeal for a “timed-out.” This incident marked Mathews as the first batter in One Day International (ODI) World Cup history to suffer this unusual dismissal.

Remarkably, Mathews is also the first batter to experience this rare dismissal in men’s international cricket. The unusual dismissal occurred when, after the departure of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 24th over, Mathews walked out to face Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan. However, Mathews mistakenly brought the wrong helmet to the crease, resulting in Shakib and his team appealing for a timed-out.

‘Timed-out’ Angelo Mathews creates unwanted record at World Cup

According to the cricket laws, a batter must be prepared to face the ball within three minutes of arriving at the crease. Mathews attempted to explain his situation to Shakib, arguing that he was delayed in facing the first ball due to a broken helmet strap. However, Shakib declined to withdraw the appeal, leading to Mathews’ dismissal in Delhi.

Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Russel Arnold, while on air, expressed his amazement, saying, “This is the first time I have ever witnessed something like this.” Mathews’ timed-out dismissal sparked significant debate on social media, as it marked the first such instance in international cricket. It’s worth noting that while timed-out dismissals have occurred in first-class cricket, they are exceedingly rare in the international arena. One notable incident took place during the 1987-88 match between Eastern Province and Transvaal when Andrew Jordaan was given out due to delayed arrival caused by flooded roads. Another instance involved Hemulal Yadav, who was given out during Tripura’s match against Odisha in the 1997-98 season when he failed to reach the crease in time.
