Women’s Ashes: Issy Wong recalled for T20 series as Danielle Gibson earns first full white-ball call-up

For the Women’s Ashes T20, Issy Wong has been summoned back by England, and Danielle Gibson has received her first complete white-ball call-up.

Despite both Tammy Beaumont and seam bowler Lauren Filer excelling in the Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge to open the series, neither has a spot.

In the 89-run loss to Australia, Beaumont hit the first double-hundred by an Englishwoman in a Test match, and 22-year-old rookie Filer claimed four wickets with her ferocious fast bowling.

The 16 players chosen as England attempts to bounce back from that initial Test loss include Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Freya Davies, Charlie Dean, Sarah Glenn, and Lauren Winfield-Hill, who were all a part of the side for the T20 World Cup in February.

In an effort to turn the series’ tide, England is currently seeking some new inspiration. As a result, Gibson is given her first full IT20 call-up after being named to England’s Ashes Test squad earlier this month and travelling to the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as a travelling reserve in February. Wong is also called up after being left off the World Cup roster and participating in recent England Women A T20 matches against Australia A.

Australia is the opponent for Heather Knight’s team on Saturday, July 1, Wednesday, July 5, and Saturday, July 8, with each match worth two points confronting a difficult challenge.

Head coach Jon Lewis said: “We’re really looking forward to our IT20s in the next part of our Ashes Series.

“A number of those selected have performed exceptionally well for England A in their short format fixtures and it’s great to have them back with us.

“Danielle Gibson is selected for the first time in our IT20 squad, she is in great form at regional level and has the potential to impact the game whenever she is called upon.

“Issy Wong returns to the T20 squad after her success in the Women’s Premier League with Mumbai Indians, it will be exciting to see how she has progressed and grown from those experiences.

“We look forward to playing these three matches and putting on a show for everyone to enjoy.”

In the meanwhile, England Women A have named a squad for their opening 50-over match against Australia A at Loughborough on Wednesday, following their hat-trick of T20 triumphs over Australia A. For their 50-over season, Grace Scrivens will serve as the team’s captain.
