Who is Tanveer Sangha? Know Stats of Indian Origin player in Australia’s ODI World Cup 2023 Squad

Cricket Association of Australia (CA) on 7th August announced its 18-player preliminary squad for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, as well as two lead-in series against South Africa and India.

As Australia becomes the first nation to announce the team, several cricket enthusiasts and experts couldn’t help but point out the absence of Marnus Labuschagne and the Ashes 2023 star batter Usman Khawaja.

Despite that, the 21-year-old Tanveer Sangha made headlines to have made his way into the mighty Australian team. However, this won’t be his first time in the Australian colors. The young Indian-origin cricketer has been a part of his country’s national team in 2021 as well.

Interesting, isn’t it?

Keeping that in mind, we have prepared a long description of Tanveer Sangha and his previous international appearance. Having said that, read further to know more.

Who is Tanveer Sangha?

Australian cricketer Tanveer Sangha, who competes for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL), was born on November 26, 2001. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm leg spin. With 15 wickets, he led Australia in wicket-taking at the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Rahimpur, a village close to Jalandhar in India, is where Tanveer’s father, Joga Sangha, is from. Joga arrived in Australia in 1997 to pursue his education before settling down in Sydney’s southwest. Tanveer’s mother, Upneet, is an accountant in Sydney, while Tanveer’s father works as a cab driver there.

“I never watched cricket in India. I played kabaddi, volleyball, and wrestling. Here, we have wrestling tournaments in winter and Tanveer would often accompany me and play in the junior bouts,” Joga told the Indian Express when 19-year-old Tanveer gained his maiden international call back in 2021.

“When he was ten years old, we got him enrolled in the Ingleburn RSL Club to play cricket. I picked up and dropped Tanveer from our home in Ingleburn to the club and that meant I had to skip some of my taxi rides and work early morning or late at night.”

Cricket Stats of Tanveer Sangha

On December 12, 2020, he played his first Twenty20 match for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League for 2020–21. Sangha was a member of Australia’s Twenty20 International (T20I) team during their series against New Zealand in January 2021.

On October 27, 2021, representing New South Wales in the 2021–22 Sheffield Shield season, he made his first-class debut. On November 24, 2021, he played for New South Wales in the 2021–22 Marsh One-Day Cup, making his List A debut. He inked a contract with Birmingham Phoenix in August 2022 to participate in The Hundred.

Further about the young cricketer

The only second player of Indian origin to have represented Australia in T20Is, Sangha went to the East Hills Boys High School, which has the Waugh brothers as alumni. However, it’s not exactly a ‘sports school’.

“I was over the moon when I got the call. It took a while for it to sink in. I did not expect to be selected at such a young age,” Tanveer told TOI.

Sangha went to the East Hills Boys High School, which has the Waugh brothers as alumni. However, it’s not exactly a ‘sports school’.

“A lot of people told me to go to a sports school,” Sangha told The Sydney Morning Herald last month. “I had friends that went to a sports school and had training after school, training before school, and during school. For me, it wasn’t cricket, cricket, cricket all the time. I 100 percent loved going to a normal public school. I could just chill out and then I could focus on cricket.”

According to Joga, Sangha is a capable bat too.

“He is a very good batsman. He batted five times in the U-19 World Cup and had a strike rate of 85.26. To avoid a shoulder injury, I suggested he take up spin bowling instead of pace bowling,” Joga told Times of India.
