Asia Cup 2023 schedule: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Monday confirmed that the Asia Cup 2023 tournament will be played between August 31 and September 17.
The tournament will go off in Pakistan with four games after the ACC approved the use of a hybrid concept. The last nine games of the tournament, which will be played in the ODI format this year, will subsequently be played in Sri Lanka.
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal, which earned its first-ever qualifying into the continental event this year, will compete in the six-team Asia Cup in 2023.
After defeating Pakistan in the 2022 United Arab Emirates Asia Cup final, Sri Lanka is the current champion.
In the league stage, India is grouped with Pakistan and Nepal, while the second group consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The two teams from both groups will move into the Super Four round-robin stage. The two teams from the round will then proceed to the final.
Will Pakistan pull out of Asia Cup 2023?
An early development indicated that Pakistan would have been in danger of being excluded from the Asia Cup in 2023 if Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka rejected the hybrid tournament format. The BCCI’s refusal to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the forthcoming tournament sparked the debate about which country would host the Asia Cup in 2023.
According to the PTI report, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Najam Sethi had already begun discussing the country’s response if they are not chosen to host any Asia Cup matches with members of the cricket management committee and the Pakistani government.
“Pakistan has just two choices. Play the tournament in a neutral site or withdraw,” a source from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was reported as saying by PTI.
The insider said, “If Pakistan doesn’t play, it will still be named the Asia Cup, but the broadcaster will renegotiate the agreement in Pakistan’s absence.”
However, now that an official statement regarding Asia Cup 2023 schedule has been declared, things are looking to have been sorted out between the Asian board and Pakistan regarding the hybrid model.
Resultingly, Pakistan will notably play in the upcoming marquee tournament but will also host four matches.
