What multiple records have been broken in Ashes 2023? Check out Most Runs Scorer, Wickets Taker

Even though England and Australia tied 2-2 in the Ashes series at The Oval, the series delivered in spades on all of its lofty expectations.

Australia keeps the Ashes, which they have held since their home victory in 2017–2018 thanks to the drew series. The team retained the urn after drawing the 2019 series in the UK and winning the 2021–2022 series by a score of 4-0. Australia continues to lead in overall series victories, 34-32, and this series is the seventh to be drawn.

Only twice have two consecutive men’s Ashes series in England finished in a draw; the first times were in 1968 (1-1) and 1972 (2-2).

Here are some statistical oddities from the series after the attention-grabbing one has concluded.

Fact Trivia: Challenging to win after 2001

Australia hasn’t triumphed in an away series in England in 22 years, despite keeping the urn; the last time they did it was in 2001 with a 4-1 score.

After winning a 49-run victory and dismissing Australia for 334 in their pursuit of 384 runs, the hosts retained their record unblemished this century.

With the triumph, England has now won all four of their most recent men’s Test matches at The Oval in London when they have batted first, which is the same-longest streak of these contests at the stadium.

Ashes 2023: Prolific Khawaja leaves an imprint on history scores most runs in the series

Usman Khawaja led the two sides in the series with 496 runs at an average of 49.60, and he also reached 5,000 Test runs at an average of 47.20.

The 36-year-old outperformed Chris Rogers’ 480 in 2015 to record the most prolific series total by an Australian opener in an away Ashes series in the 21st century. If home series are included, only David Warner’s 523 in 2013/2014 outperforms Khawaja’s performances during the same time span.

Since Mark Taylor’s 136 and 60 at Headingley in 1989, Khawaja’s 206 runs at Edgbaston marked the first century/half-century effort by an Australian in an England Ashes match.

Steve Smith’s 373 runs at 37.3 were less than his fruitful 2019 series, but his 54 in the series’ penultimate inning propelled him over Steve Waugh’s 24 scores of 50+ in Ashes Tests.

The only players older than the 34-year-old are Don Bradman (31) and Allan Border (29) in the league.

Zak Crawley, who started for England, had a successful series. His average of 53.33 (480 runs) was higher than everyone else on both teams. Crawley also led the group of players who scored 100 runs or more in the series in terms of strike rate (88.72).

His tally is the highest Ashes total by an England opener since Alastair Cook in the 2010/2011 series.

Woakes’ wickets rule, Broad joins elite company, and Starc’s swing shines

In Ashes Test matches, only the late Shane Warne (195) and Glenn McGrath (157) have received more accolades than Stuart Broad, a fast bowler who finished the game with 153 wickets at an average of just 28.96.

The fast ends with 604 Test wickets at a strike rate of 27.68, ranking fifth overall and second among Englishmen after James Anderson (690). In a home Test match against Australia, Broad finished with 106 wickets, breaking Anderson’s previous record of 106 against India. By the completion of the Test, England’s starting XI had taken a total of 2009 Test wickets, which was a record for a playing XI.

The fast bowler finished tied for third place among bowlers at The Oval with 45 wickets in men’s Test matches. Additionally, Broad has taken the most wickets of any bowler in men’s Test matches—45 or more—at six distinct locations. Broad also made history by being the first player to score a wicket with his final ball in Test cricket and hit a six off the last ball he faced as a Test batter.

With 19 wickets at an average of 18.1 in the latter stages of the series, Chris Woakes joined Broad as the only bowler with 15+ wickets at an average under 20 since Richard Ellison in 1985.

The only player to take more wickets than Broad in the series was Australian left-armer Mitchell Starc, who claimed 23 wickets at 27.08.

Bowlers are beaten by sixes and aren’t aided by run-outs.

The five Test matches combined for 74 sixes, breaking the previous series high of 65 during the 2013/2014 series.

Ben Stokes’ 15 of his own, which surpassed Kevin Pietersen’s 14 in 2005, is also a record.

Curiously, no batter was run out in the 2023 series, making it just the second Ashes of five or more matches to be completed without a dismissal (1998/1999).
