Watch: Ex-Liverpool striker Iago Aspas throws VAR monitor after late penalty overturned

Former Liverpool flop Iago Aspas threw a VAR monitor on the ground after Celta Vigo had a late penalty decision overturned in a 1-1 draw with Sevilla.

The Spaniard started the game, but he was subbed off with 20 minutes on the clock. Moreover, Celta were on course to win the match, but Youssef En-Nesyri came off the bench to score a equaliser.

Nevertheless, Celta were awarded a penalty by referee Alejandro Hernandez for an apparent foul by Jesus Navas on Anastasios Douvikas.

But after a VAR check, Hernandez overturned his decision, sparking fury among the home crowd and their players. Iago Aspas was watching all the drama from the bench and could not control his anger.

Aspas was on the sidelines when the decision was announced and stormed towards the area where the VAR monitor was kept. He then grabbed the monitor with both hands and threw it to the ground before being led away by a member of Celta’s coaching staff.

Even after game ended, he was still furious and said: “The balance always falls on the same side. And today, when it could have favoured us, he goes to the VAR to see it when all of Spain has seen it,” Aspas fumed to DAZN Sport.

“We have been through twelve days, and in seven games, the balance always falls the other way. We want to be the best league in the world, and we are not advancing like this.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta also went mad after the decision was gone against them in a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at the St James’ Park.

The result means Celta sit 18th in La Liga with just one win all season. Sevilla, on the other hand, are in 14th, but only sit four points ahead of Benitez’s side.
