Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury: Reports

Sri Lanka has been dealt with a major blow before the World Cup as it was reported that Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The leg spinner has been suffering from a hamstring tear. Previously, Hasaranga was also unable to participate in the recently concluded Asia Cup due to the same injury.

The last time he was seen in action was during the Lanka Premier League, where he led the B Kandy Love team. Sri Lankan selectors now have time till September 28 to name Hasaranga’s replacement as it is the last date to make changes to the team without approval.

Major Missing

During the recently concluded Lanka Premier League, Wanindu Hasaranga displayed exceptional all-round skills and was in top form. He emerged as the highest run-scorer of the tournament, accumulating 279 runs, and also claimed the most wickets with 19 to his name.

He won multiple awards, including the maximum sixes, highest wicket-taker, highest run-getter, and was named the Player of the Tournament as well. This highlights his significance in the Sri Lankan team. If Hasaranga is unable to participate in the World Cup, it will be a significant loss for the team.

“We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not. If he does, he will be out for at least three months. At the moment, the situation is not that great and it’s highly unlikely if he can play the World Cup,” Prof. Arjuna de Silva, Head of the Sri Lanka Cricket Medical Panel, said.

“Since he is a key weapon in our attack, we are looking at other options to see how best we can get his services at least for important games. All that depends on the opinions of the consultant to whom we are trying to show his reports,” he added.

Injury Concerns

Sri Lanka is also without the services of fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera who was ruled out of the Asia Cup and the World Cup with an injury. He was last seen in action during the Lanka Premier League. “Chameera is bowling at the moment but still complains of pain. We have consulted a doctor in the United Kingdom to see how best we could treat him,” Prof. de Silva said.
