Wales 2-1 Croatia: Harry Wilson scores twice to reignite Euro 2024 qualification hopes

Harry Wilson scored a brace as Wales produced one of their best performances to beat Croatia and reignite Euro 2024 qualification hopes.

Wales rose to the occasion at the Cardiff City Stadium as Wilson’s strike in 47th and 60th minute mark helped Rob Page’s side to leapfrog Croatia into second place in Group D.

Wilson’s first goal was a beautifully-lofted finish after a delicate through ball from David Brooks, and his second, a glancing header from a Daniel James cross, sparked pandemonium in the stands.

Croatia did pull one back after Mario Pasalic scored when there was just 15 minutes left on the clock. Nevertheless, Wales were able to get through the nervy end.

This victory will give them a big boost for their aspirations to automatic qualification. Moreover, it has also relieved some pressure on manager Robert Page’s back, who has faced heavy criticism recently.

Wales beat Croatia to reignite Euro 2024 qualification hopes

Wales must now beat Armenia and Turkey in their final two qualifiers in November to secure their place at next summer’s tournament in Germany at Croatia’s expense.

However, they have already suffered a defeat to Armenia and Turkey. So, they must set their standards high, like they did against Croatia.

If they fail to finish among Group D’s top two, Wales may yet prosper via the play-offs. They qualified for the World Cup last year in the same manner, but they will look to avoid that option.

A big performance against a side like Croatia, who finished third in the World Cup last year and were runners-up in the Nations League, is remarkable for Wales.

Wales will now hope to secure the automatic qualification for the Euro 2024.
