Sri Lanka all-rounder Hasaranga retires from Test cricket

Wanindu Hasaranga announced his retirement from Test cricket on August 16 in order to pursue a limited-overs career.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that it has accepted the 26-year-old Hasaranga’s decision.

“We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball programme going forward,” said SLC CEO Ashley De Silva.

Hasaranga played three more Tests after making his Test debut against South Africa at Centurion in 2020.

He used his leg spin to take four wickets in four Test matches. His final test was played in Pallekele in 2021 against Bangladesh.

Hasaranga, though, still plays a significant role for Sri Lanka in white ball formats as the team’s star spinner and useful lower-order batsman. Hasaranga played in 48 ODIs, taking 67 wickets, and scored 832 runs with four fifty-plus scores.

Hasaranga has 533 runs with a fifty and 91 wickets from 58 T20Is. The Lankan is a highly sought-after player in several T20 leagues worldwide.
