US Open 2023: Medvedev, Sinner, and Rublev Secure Fourth-Round Seats

In a thrilling encounter at the US Open, third seed Daniil Medvedev managed to fend off a determined challenge from Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, securing his spot in the last 16. The Russian, who clinched the US Open title in 2021, triumphed after a tense third set tiebreaker, winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Medvedev Overcomes Late Drama

Medvedev’s victory came at 01:30 local time, making it two consecutive late-night finishes for the talented player. He confessed that competing at such hours was taxing and left him yearning for rest. However, he expressed relief that the match didn’t extend into the early hours like his previous encounter.

“I just want to go to sleep. It’s good we did not finish at 4 am,” he quipped, reflecting the fatigue of playing late-night matches. He candidly admitted feeling uneasy throughout the match due to lack of sleep and an early meal.

Daniil Medvedev will now face off against Australian 13th seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round. De Minaur advanced with ease, dispatching Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in straight sets with a convincing 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Italian sixth seed Jannik Sinner delivered a solid performance to eliminate former champion Stan Wawrinka. In a hard-fought battle, Sinner secured the win with a scoreline of 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. This victory propels the 22-year-old into the fourth round.

Sinner to Face Zverev

Jannik Sinner’s next challenge comes in the form of Germany’s Alexander Zverev. Zverev, a finalist in 2020, secured his spot in the fourth round by defeating Bulgarian 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov with a scoreline of 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 6-1.

Russia’s Andrey Rublev showcased his prowess on the court as he overcame a shaky start to secure his place in the fourth round. The eighth seed bounced back from a first-set loss to triumph over Arthur Rinderknech of France with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5.

Andrey Rublev’s next opponent will be Britain’s Jack Draper, who made history by reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time. The 21-year-old Briton achieved this feat with a victory over Michael Mmoh.

Jack Draper remains the sole British contender in the singles category after Cameron Norrie’s defeat to Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi and Dan Evans’ loss to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
