Uncertainty Surrounds Rohit Sharma’s Test Captaincy; Likely to be sacked by after WI tour

The recent defeat in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final has raised questions about Rohit Sharma’s future as the captain of the Indian Test team. With a new WTC cycle approaching and concerns about his age during the next WTC final, uncertainties have emerged regarding Rohit’s captaincy. Let’s delve into the latest developments surrounding this issue and the upcoming West Indies series.

Rohit Sharma to be sacked after West Indies tour

Following the disappointing WTC final loss, doubts have surfaced about Rohit Sharma’s ability to lead the team in the longer format. As the new WTC cycle commences, there are concerns about his captaincy skills and the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in the 2025 WTC final.

A report from the Press Trust of India (PTI) suggests that Rohit’s position as captain may be in jeopardy after the West Indies series. If the 36-year-old fails to deliver an impressive performance in the upcoming series, starting on July 12, the selectors might contemplate making a change in leadership.

Despite the speculations, a senior BCCI source has dismissed the rumors and emphasized that there are currently no grounds to remove Rohit from the captaincy. The source clarified that Rohit’s batting form will be evaluated after the West Indies series before any decision is made.

Time for Deliberation

With no Test matches scheduled until India’s tour of South Africa in December, the selectors have ample time to deliberate and assess Rohit’s captaincy. The inclusion of a new chairman of selectors in the panel adds fresh perspectives to the decision-making process.

Rohit Sharma initially hesitated to take on the role of Test captain when Virat Kohli stepped down due to fitness issues. However, he accepted the responsibility after persuasion from former president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah. Rohit has led the team in seven Test matches, with notable victories in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.

The uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma’s captaincy looms large as the BCCI evaluates his performance and leadership skills. The upcoming West Indies series will be crucial in determining his future as the Indian Test captain. As the cricketing world eagerly awaits a final verdict, Rohit will have the opportunity to showcase his capabilities and silence the skeptics.
