UEFA bans Juventus from Europa Conference League

Juventus have been handed a one-year ban from European competitions by UEFA for breaching financial fair play rules. The Italian club will have to pay a fine of €20 million.

However, €10 million of that is conditional and will only be enforced if there is irregularity in their annual financial statements until 2025. Juventus will not compete in the 2023/24 Europa Conference League and will likely be replaced by Fiorentina, who finished eighth in Serie A last season.

UEFA’s statement after banning Juventus

UEFA’s statement: “Juventus violated UEFA’s regulatory framework and it was decided to exclude Juventus from the 2023/24 UEFA men’s club competition.”

Moreover, Juventus have decided not to appeal the decision. The Bianconeri were also handed a 10 point deduction in Serie A, which eventually ended their hopes of Champions League qualification.

Juventus president Gianluca Ferrero said in a statement on the club’s website: “We regret the decision of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body.

“We do not share the interpretation that has been given of our defence and we remain firmly convinced of the legitimacy of our actions and the validity of our arguments.

“However, we have decided not to appeal this judgement. Despite this painful decision, we can now face the new season by focusing on the field and not on the courts.”

Juve’s exclusion from the Europa Conference League is a significant blow to the club, given their previous standing in Serie A, where they finished seventh and qualified for the playoff round of the competition.

Chelsea have also faced repercussions from UEFA. The Premier League giants have been fined €10 million for submitting incomplete financial information related to historical transactions between 2012 and 2019.

However, with their 12th place finish in the Premier League, Chelsea will not participate in Europe in the 2023-24 season.
