Tottenham boss Antonio Conte slams ‘selfish players’ after late draw with Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has launched a scathing attack on his players after they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 against Southampton in a Premier League match on Sunday. The Italian coach accused some members of the team of being selfish and not willing to play under pressure.

Tottenham were leading 3-1 with just 16 minutes remaining at St Mary’s Stadium and looked set to move into the top three. However, they allowed Southampton to score twice late in the game, with James Ward-Prowse’s stoppage-time penalty rescuing a point for the home side.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, a visibly frustrated Conte said he was not accustomed to seeing such situations and criticized his players for not showing a team spirit. He also expressed his displeasure during a ten-minute post-match press conference, saying, “We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart.”

Blames Tottenham’s poor results on the lack of ambition

Conte blamed Tottenham’s poor results on the lack of ambition and desire to win at the club, saying that the players were not playing for anything important. He added that the owner had been there for twenty years, but the club had never won anything, and that it was not just the fault of the club or the managers but also the players.

Former Tottenham midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp said it felt as though Conte’s position as manager was becoming untenable. The draw at Southampton dented Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, leaving them just two points above fifth-placed Newcastle with two games in hand.

Responsibility lies with the club, managers and players

Conte expressed his disappointment with the players’ lack of commitment and attitude, saying that they were playing for themselves instead of the team. He criticized the players for not wanting to play under pressure and not being willing to play under stress. He said that the players needed to take responsibility for their actions and improve their commitment levels if they wanted to be competitive and fight for a higher position in the league.

Conte also highlighted the responsibilities of the club, managers, and players in the transfer market. He said that every coach that had been at Tottenham had a responsibility for the transfer market, and the same went for the players. The players needed to improve their attitude and commitment levels if they wanted to be competitive, he added.

Time for change

Conte concluded by saying that everyone had to take responsibility for the situation and that it was time for a change if Tottenham wanted to change their fortunes. He said that if the club wanted to continue in the same way, they could change the manager many times, but the situation would remain the same. Conte expressed his frustration with the team’s performance in recent weeks, saying that it was unacceptable for the fans who paid to see the team play.
