Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: PGMOL admits ‘significant error’ over disallowed Luis Diaz goal

PGMOL admits ‘significant human error’ over Luis Diaz’ disallowed goal against Tottenham Hotspur. As a result, the Reds lost 2-1 to Tottenham.

PGMOL, the body responsible for referees in the Premier League, have officially admitted that they have made a mistake.

Luis Diaz scored the goal eight minutes after Liverpool were 10 men down through Curtis Jones’ red-card. Furthermore, after he scored the offside flag was immediately raised, that ruled out the goal.

VAR did come into play and confirmed the decision that it was offside, but no lines were visibly drawn up.

“PGMOL acknowledges significant human error occurred during the first-half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed by the on-field team of match officials,” a statement from PGMOL read.

Tottenham beat Liverpool after late drama and VAR error

This is not the first time VAR has made the wrong decision or failed to intervene when necessary. Referee Lee Mason left the PGMOL in February after failing to draw VAR’s offside lines and rule out a Brentford goal against Arsenal.

The same month, an offside line was incorrectly drawn during Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, meaning Pervis Estupinan’s goal was wrongly disallowed.

Jurgen Klopp was fuming after the match and was clearly unhappy after he was told of the PGMOL statement.

“Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game. Did Wolves get points for it? We won’t get points for it. We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier,” Klopp said.

“The decision was made really quick for that decision. It changed the momentum for the game. It was super difficult but the boys dealt extremely well with it.”
