In a spectacular display of batting prowess, 21-year-old Tilak Varma marked the beginning of his domestic season with an unbeaten century on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy 2024. Leading the Hyderabad side, Varma’s blistering knock of 100* off 112 balls propelled the team to a commanding total of 474/5 at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Dimapur.

Aggressive Start for Hyderabad

Hyderabad’s batting unit showcased aggressive intent from the outset, with three of the top four batters scoring 50+ runs. Gahlaut Rahul Singh played a pivotal role, smashing an impressive 214 off just 157 balls. The relentless assault forced Nagaland to deploy seven bowlers on the opening day of the First-Class encounter, but none could contain Hyderabad’s onslaught.

Tilak Varma, who experienced a meteoric rise in Indian cricket, particularly excelling in the Indian Premier League, reaffirmed his potential with this commanding innings. The 21-year-old batter, entrusted with the captaincy of Hyderabad, has emerged as one of the most promising young talents in Indian cricket. In the limited opportunities in international cricket, Tilak Varma has showcased glimpses of his talent. With 68 runs in four ODI matches, including a half-century, and 310 runs in 15 T20I matches at an average of 34.4, Varma has demonstrated his ability to adapt to different formats. His strike rate of 141.60 in T20Is, coupled with two half-centuries, underscores his dynamic batting style.

At the conclusion of Day 1 in their first First-Class game of the season, Hyderabad asserted their dominance, amassing 474/5 in 76.4 overs. Tilak Varma remained unbeaten, partnering with Ravi Teja at the crease. The formidable display of batting strength unfolded at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium, setting the stage for Hyderabad’s campaign in the Plate group of the Ranji Trophy.

Commencing on January 5, the Ranji Trophy 2024 aligns with the India vs. England Test series and is scheduled to run until March 14.
