Tennis Star Bia Haddad Maia Withdraws from Guadalajara Open After Shower Mishap

Brazilian tennis sensation Beatriz “Bia” Haddad Maia, ranked world no. 18, had to make an unfortunate exit from the Guadalajara Open Akron. Her unexpected departure from the tournament was the result of a shocking accident that occurred in her hotel bathroom. Haddad Maia was hospitalized after sustaining injuries that required stitches due to a shower box explosion.

Tournament Disappointment

Haddad Maia was initially set to compete in the WTA 1000-level women’s tennis tournament, where she was scheduled for a round of 64 clash against American player Danielle Collins. However, on the eve of their anticipated match, the 27-year-old Brazilian was forced to withdraw due to her injuries. She will be replaced by World No. 168 Sachia Vickery, a Florida-born tennis player.

Fresh from her quarterfinal appearance at the San Diego Open, Haddad Maia took to social media to provide insight into the bizarre accident that led to her withdrawal. She shared the details of her injuries with her 371,000 followers on Instagram, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the incident.

“Hey guys, I hope all are doing well,” she posted on Instagram. “Unfortunately, this is a more ‘boring’ post, but it is also part of it.”

She went on to describe the incident, stating, “Last night, Sunday, at the hotel, getting out of the shower and opening the shower box, the door just popped, and I ended up cutting some parts of my body. I had to go to the hospital here in Guadalajara to get stitches (between them in both hands), and unfortunately, I will not be able to play here in Mexico (a special place for us tennis players due to all the responsiveness of the people and efforts of the tournaments).”

Hopeful for a Swift Recovery

Despite the severity of her injuries, Haddad Maia remains optimistic about her return to the tennis court later in the year. She expressed gratitude for the support and well-wishes from her fans and the tennis community.

“Besides the scare, I’m fine. It could be something much more serious,” she added.

“I will need a few days now to heal the wounds and be able to be back for the latter part of the year and keep fighting for my goals for 2023. I appreciate the affection and good vibes from everyone. Have a nice week and see you soon.”
