Tamim Iqbal criticizes Litton Das’ decision to call back Ish Sodhi after running him out at the non-striker’s end

Run out at the non-striker’s end has been a hotly debated topic in the last few years and the debate has become more prominent after the MCC took away the term Mankad to deem it as a normal run out. The cricket fraternity has always been divided on whether a batter should leave the crease and should the bowler penalize him for doing so.

The incident of run out at the non-striker’s end has significantly increased since the MCC has deemed it as a normal dismissal. We saw last year Deepti Sharma running out English batters in the same fashion which sparked a controversy.

The Indian Connection

Interestingly at the start of 2023, Shami did something similar to Dasun Shanaka when the batter was nearing his century. The fast bowler ran Shanka out at the non-striker’s end only for Rohit Sharma to withdraw the appeal. Some people questioned Rohit’s action and asked if the Indian captain would have done the same thing had it been the final game of a big tournament and the opposition needed 2 runs off 1 ball.

The Repeat

The same incident took place in the second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand. It was in the 46th over of the New Zealand innings when Bangladeshi fast bowler Hasan Mahmud took off the bails before delivering the ball at the non-striker’s end where Ish Sodhi was found out of his crease when the decision was referred to the third umpire.

As Sodhi was heading back, he sarcastically applauded Mahmud, but Bangladesh captain Litton Das intervened and eventually called Sodhi back to continue playing. The skipper’s decision, though, has found opposition from his own teammate – senior opener and former captain Tamim Iqbal.

The experienced Bangladeshi batter reacting to the incident said “I don’t see anything wrong in it,” Tamim said after the match. “The rule is there. If we get someone out, or one of us gets out in that manner, I don’t think we should react the way people are reacting nowadays. “I think it is a team decision. We will definitely talk about it after today’s incident. If it is a team decision that we will take wickets in this way, we will. If we don’t want to take it, we will not try it. I don’t think it looks good to bring back a batter after getting him out. Either we take it, or we don’t do it.”
