Suryakumar Yadav keen on cracking the code of ODI cricket in Asia Cup

There is no doubt that Suryakumar Yadav has been in sensational form in T20 cricket with the batter ranked number one in the shortest international format of the game for quite some time. But Surya hasn’t been able to replicate his T20I heroics in ODI cricket where he averages just 24 after as many games.

The batter is also aware of the fact that his ODI numbers are not that good and he says that he is working on his game in ODI cricket. He has been talking with coach Rahul Dravid Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on how to approach this format of the game.

When Surya was selected in the squad for the Asia Cup the decision got mixed views from around the cricketing circles. Some experts were in favor of Surya’s selection while others were not that pleased by the decision and felt that Sanju Samson should have been in the 17-member squad.

Cracking the code

Surya is also aware of the fact that the Asia Cup could be his chance to crack the code of ODI cricket. In the words of Surya, “I would try to fulfill the role I am given by the team, no matter what role. This is a format I am looking forward to doing well in. I am doing great in T20Is. But these both are white-ball formats. Why I cannot crack the code here, people are wondering,” Suryakumar told Star Sports.

“I am practicing. For me, this format is the most challenging one. You have to play a mix of all formats in this one. First, you take your time, then you do some strike rotation then go for some big shots like in T20Is. I have been talking to head coach Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli,” he added.

Adapting to situations

Mentioning his practice Surya said that he is trying to adapt to different situations and is practicing accordingly. “But I am now trying to play as per the situation and practicing accordingly. Hopefully, this is the tournament where I crack the code. I am always excited to bat.

It does not matter if I am out on the first ball. People ask me why I sprint to the crease when my chance to bat comes, but I feel that maintaining this excitement is important,” Suryakumar said.
