Sunil Gavaskar gets furious over people questioning the omission of players

The former Indian captain said ‘Don’t talk about Ashwin. This is our Team India, stop creating controversy’

India’s much-anticipated squad for the Asia Cup was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar yesterday through a press conference held in Delhi. The team was much on the expected with only the exclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal coming as a surprise to many. There was also the temptation of picking R Ashwin in the squad as India doesn’t have an off-spinner among the 17 players selected for the Asia Cup. The chief selector clarified that because only 17 players were permitted to be picked in the squad that was the reason why the likes of Chahal and R Ashwin could not find a place in the tram. As soon as the squad was announced reactions from former cricketers started pouring in with former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly saying that the squad looks great. While Gautam Gambhir who was working with Star Sports when the squad was announced said that the team lacks a wrist spinner.

Honest Gavaskar

Talking about opinions of former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar also gave his reaction on the squad and said that the squad picked for the Asia Cup looks good. The legendary Indian opener also lost his cool when he was asked about the omission of R Ashwin. “Yes, there are a few players who will believe that they are lucky. But the team is selected. So don’t talk about Ashwin. Stop creating controversy. This is our team now. If you don’t like it, don’t watch the matches but stop saying that he should have been picked or another should be there, this is a wrong mindset,” Gavaskar said on Aaj Tak.

Gavaskar Backs Rahul

Apart from that questions have also been raised on Rahul’s selection after it was revealed that he has picked up a niggle and is a doubtful starter for India’s first match against Pakistan. But Sunil Gavaskar has backed Rahul’s selection. “Let’s see what his injury is like. Winning the Asia Cup is important but the goal is the World Cup. So, If the team management wants KL Rahul in the World Cup squad then I think it’s right that they have selected him for Asia Cup despite a niggle. As far as India are concerned, there are 11 days to go. That’s enough time to recover from a niggle. And there are more matches as well, right till the middle of September. I think it will be fair to give KL Rahul (a chance) after all that he has done for India in the past, to give him the opportunity to recover” Gavaskar said.
