Stuart Broad Retirement: England Star’s Unforgettable Records in International Cricket

Stuart Broad confirmed after the third day of play at The Oval that the fifth Ashes Test will be his final, as he announced his retirement from competitive cricket, bringing an end to a 17-year international career.

“Tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday will be my last game of cricket. It has been a wonderful ride and a huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and England badge as much as I have,” Broad told Sky Sports after Stumps on day three.

“It’s been a wonderful ride, a huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and the England badge as much as I have and I’m loving cricket as much as I ever have.”

“It’s been such a wonderful series to be a part of and I’ve always wanted to finish it on top,” Broad said. “This series feels like one of the most enjoyable and entertaining I’ve been a part of.

“I’ve got a love affair with Ashes cricket and I think I wanted my last bat and bowl to be in the Ashes.”

Broad, one of only two pacers to reach 600 Test wickets (together with James Anderson), also became only the third bowler in Ashes history with 150+ Test wickets during the Oval Test. He will complete his career as the fifth-highest Test wicket-taker. On that note, we have curated a series of stats to pay tribute to the England pacer and his king-size career.

Stuart Broad Retirement: England Star’s Unforgettable Records in International Cricket

To start with, the right-handed bowler has been at the forefront of English cricket’s contemporary era. Broad retired as the second-highest wicket-taker among pacers. He is one of four players with at least 4000 international runs and 800 international wickets. He has taken 602 wickets in 167 Test matches and 178 wickets in 121 One-Day Internationals. Broad has also appeared in 56 T20Is, taking 65 wickets.

Broad’s International Debut

Broad made his international debut on August 28, 2006, in a Twenty20 International against Pakistan. In a match that England lost by five wickets, he took two wickets. While Yuvraj Singh famously smacked him for six sixes in an over in a 2007 T20 World Cup match against India.

Broad, who made his Test debut in December 2007 against Sri Lanka, took 8 for 15 in the 2015 Ashes Test at Nottingham to record his career-best statistics in an innings, helping England knock Australia out for 60. He had already collected seven-wicket hauls at Lord’s twice. Broad’s most notable performance came at the Oval in 2009, when he bowled Australia out for 160 runs, helping England win the match by 197 runs and claim the series 2-1.

Broad only had one five-wicket haul in ODIs, a 5-23 against South Africa in 2008. In 2013, he also took four wickets in a T20I against New Zealand. Broad was also the first bowler in T20 cricket history to be hammered for six sixes in an over, a record accomplished by Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 World T20.

“Stuart Broad”: The Synonym of Ashes

Broad’s career has been linked to the Ashes. His aggressive personality has frequently earned him the title of “Public Enemy No. 1” in the Australian media. He is England’s leading wicket-taker versus Australia, being the first player from his country to take more than 150 wickets in the prestigious series. His total presently stands at 151, and he might yet break Australia’s all-time record of 157. For the time being, he is the third-highest wicket-taker in Ashes history, trailing only McGrath and late Australia spin legend Shane Warne, who both took 195 wickets.

His career-defining performance came in the 2015 Ashes at Trent Bridge, where he took spectacular figures of 8/15 in just 9.3 overs to rout Australia for 60. Broad’s eight five-wicket hauls in the Ashes are the most for any England player since before World War I.
