Sachin Tendulkar named as national icon of the Election Commission of India

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, stalwarts such as MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom had been the EC’s national icons

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been recognized as the national icon of the Election Commission of India. Tendulkar has signed a three-year MOU under which he will be part of EC’s campaign to spread awareness among people to exercise their power to vote during elections. “This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters’ participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024,” the EC said in a statement. EC’s main objective is to address the challenges of urban and youth apathy toward voting.

Face of change

EC in the past as well has been associating itself with renowned personalities to spread voting awareness among people, especially among the youth and people living in urban areas. During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, stalwarts such as MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom had been the EC’s national icons. Last year EC recognized actor Pankaj Tripathi as its national icon. Speaking on Tendulkar’s appointment Deputy Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar Sahoo said, “Today is a momentous occasion as legendary cricketer Tendulkar has agreed to be the national icon for ECI, we express gratitude for that and this alliance will help the youth and urban population with the commitment of the ECI.” “Your dedication and passion for the game of cricket have made you a role model for millions. As a national icon, your reach and influence will definitely amplify the efforts of the ECI to promote voter participation and awareness. We look forward to your valuable contribution towards strengthening the pillars of democracy,” Sahoo added.

Second Inning

Sachin Tendulkar is also the brand ambassador for the Road Safety World Series a cricket tournament played between retired players of the game to spread awareness about road safety among people. The third season of the tournament will be played in England in September this year. Nine teams will be a part of this year’s tournament with the inclusion of a team from Pakistan
