Real Madrid make decision on Luka Modric’s future

Real Madrid has decided not to offer Croatian midfielder Luka Modric a new contract and will let him leave the club on a free transfer. If Modric does leave Madrid this summer, the veteran star will end his 12-year spell at the club.

Modric joined Los Blancos in 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur, and since then, he has won three La Liga titles and five Champions League trophies.

Moreover, he also won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after guiding Croatia to the final of the World Cup in 2018.

In the past few years, the Croatian has regularly extended his stay by signing one-year deals. Nevertheless, Spanish outlet Diario Sport has reported that Real Madrid have decided not to offer Modric another extension.

January move ruled out for Luka Modric?

Several Saudi clubs were interested in signing Modric in the summer, but he rejected those moves to stay at Madrid.

However, Modric was unable to get regular gametime this season, which he had not experienced before in his career. A January move was also on the cards for him as per multiple reports.

His agent, Borja Couce, recently said: “Saudi clubs? This summer there was interest in Modric with the aim of signing him. The player has several offers, from a club from the capital and another club.

“Modric is currently thinking about Real Madrid, but the idea of him moving to the Saudi Pro League is possible if the offer is suitable.”

Real Madrid want Modric to stay until 2024

Despite playing less football with Los Blancos, the club have decided to keep Modric until his contract expires in the summer of 2024.

The 38-year-old has not played full 90 minutes in La Liga this season, and that has created frustration for the midfielder.

Ancelotti also addressed Modric’s situation, and said: “It is quite surprising that Modric does not have the same role as in the past. He has played the first Champions League game, the derby… and he has not played the last two because there is a very strong competition.

“Sometimes I have to make decisions that are very difficult to take. I don’t know how to explain it… it’s just a technical decision that has happened.
