Ravichandran Ashwin creates history by registering best ever figures against West Indies

The off-spinner took a seven-wicket haul in the second innings taking his wickets tally to 12 in the match

India won its fifth test in a row when they defeated West Indies on day three of the first test at Dominica. Ashwin led the team’s victory picking up a seven for in the second innings taking his wickets tally to 12 in the match.

He was ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja as the left-arm spinner also picked up two West Indian wickets in the second innings along with picking up three in the first innings and scoring crucial runs in the Indian innings with the bat which helped the team in going past the 400-run mark which ensured that India had enough runs in the bank going into the third innings of the match.

A Unique Record

Ashwin now holds the record for the most number of five-wicket hauls against West Indies in West Indies by an Indian. He picked up his fourth five-wicket haul in the Caribbean. He now also holds the unique taking the last wicket of the match the most number of times.

This was the 23rd instance of Ashwin picking up the last wicket of the match. He went past Shane Warne who previously held the record of taking the last wicket of the match the most number of times. The leg spinner took the last wicket of the match on 22 occasions.

The Collapse

With the pitch assisting spinners the duo of Ashwin and Jadeja was introduced into the attack early in the second innings and they proved three early introductions as Jadeja started the collapse by dismissing Chanderpaul LBW.

West Indies captain Brathwaite who showed some resistance was done by a beauty from Ashwin which was the starting of a spin bowling masterclass from the intelligent engineer turned cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin as he made the West Indies batters dance to his tune courtesy of lethal bowling display from the experienced off-spinner.

A lot of credit should be given to Jadeja who kept things tight at the other end picking up two wickets in the process. India has taken a 1-0 lead in the series with one game to go in Trinidad which will get underway from the 20th of July
