PSG Quartet Faces Potential Bans Amid Homophobic Chants Controversy

Four Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) players, Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Achraf Hakimi, and Layvin Kurzawa, have been summoned by Ligue 1’s disciplinary authorities following allegations of their involvement in homophobic chants. The hearing is scheduled for October 5, and if found guilty, the players could face suspensions.

Controversial Chants Mar Victory

During PSG’s 4-0 win against Marseille at Parc des Princes, fans engaged in prolonged homophobic chants in the second half, targeting Marseille supporters with offensive language. The controversial chants persisted at full-time while players celebrated in front of the Virage Auteuil stand, where the club’s ultras typically gather.

Confirming the investigation, Sebastien Deneux, the president of Ligue 1’s disciplinary body, stated that they were alerted to the homophobic nature of the chants and insulting comments made by certain players by officials, including delegates. As a result, the four players and the club have been summoned for a hearing on October 5.

In response to the controversy, PSG released a statement emphasizing their condemnation of all forms of discrimination, both within stadiums and society. The club also highlighted its long-standing collaboration with anti-discrimination organizations, such as SOS Homophobie, Sportitude, SOS Racisme, and Licra, and expressed its commitment to strengthening prevention efforts against homophobia.

Government’s Involvement

Amelie Oudea-Castera, the French minister for sport and former professional tennis player, called on PSG to file a complaint to identify and bring the perpetrators of the homophobic chants to justice, ultimately removing them from stadiums. She emphasized the importance of addressing such hateful chants and discrimination in sports.

The controversy surrounding homophobic chants during the PSG vs. Marseille match highlights the ongoing challenges of discrimination in football. While the disciplinary hearing will determine the fate of the four players, it also serves as a reminder of the need for ongoing efforts to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity within the sport.
