After Drury’s arrival was confirmed on Sunday, he said, “I’m massively excited to be joining Sky’s outstanding roster of commentators.

To be working on the best games week in and week out with a broadcaster that has told the Premier League story since the very beginning feels like the opportunity of my career, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Sky Sports’ director of football, Gary Hughes, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Peter Drury to Sky Sports.

Peter’s one of the game’s most poetic commentators and will bring great energy and enthusiasm, as well as his award-winning broadcasting experience to our unrivalled coverage of the Premier League.”

The 55-year-old has been named Football Supporters’ Association commentator of the year for three of the past four seasons and won the Sports Journalists Association sports commentator of the year award in 2020.

Peter Drury’s amazing commentary to sum up Lionel Messi’s World Cup 2022

After Montiel scored his penalty, Drury said,

“Montiel… Argentina, champions of the world. Again. At last. And the nation will tango all night long. 36 years ago since Maradona and Mexico, here finally is a nation’s new throng of immortals. Scaloni will be fated, Messi will be sainted.

“France this time denied… defied.”

As celebrations were ongoing for Argentina ahead of the trophy lift, Drury continued to produce poetic goodness for Messi’s long-awaited triumph.

“Lionel Messi has shaken hands with paradise,” he added.

“The little boy from Rosario, Santa Fe, has just pitched up in heaven. He climbs into a galaxy of his own. He has his crowning moment and of course, he is not alone.”

However, alongside his work for Sky, he will continue to provide commentary on NBC’s Premier League coverage in the United States.
