Pep Guardiola to miss next two matches after minor ‘back surgery’ in Barcelona

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will be absent until after the international break after undergoing emergency surgery for ‘back pain’ in Barcelona.

Guardiola had been struggling with a back pain for quite some time now. So, he flew to Barcelona after City’s latest Premier League win over Newcastle for ’emergency surgery’.

Furthermore, he is set to be absent for City’s next two fixtures against Sheffield United and Fulham. His assistant Junma Lilo will take the first-team reins in his absence.

Man City’s statement on Guardiola’s surgery

Manchester City released an official statement, which reads: “Pep Guardiola has today undergone a routine operation on a back problem. The Manchester City boss has been suffering from severe back pain for some time lately. He then flew to Barcelona for emergency surgery performed by Dr Mireia Illueca. The surgery was a success, and Pep will now recover and rehabilitate in Barcelona.

“In his absence, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will oversee coaching of the first team on the training field and will assume duties on the touchline until Pep’s return. He is expected to return after the forthcoming international break. Everyone at Manchester City wishes Pep a speedy recovery, and look forward to seeing him back in Manchester soon.”

Pep Guardiola undergoes ’emergency surgery’ in Barcelona

The former Barcelona manager guided Man City to the Premier League, FA Cup and their first Champions League title last season.

City sit second in the Premier League in the early stages of this campaign, level on six points with leaders Brighton and Arsenal in third. They have beaten Burnley and Newcastle United in their opening two game weeks. Moreover, they are yet to conceded a single goal in the Premier League.

They also won the UEFA Super Cup by beating Europa League winners Sevilla 5-4 on penalties in Athens last week.

The Treble winning manager is set to return to the dugout after the International break.
