Pakistan has incurred a penalty for a slow over-rate during the first Test against Australia in Perth. The team has been fined 10 percent of their match fee, and two ICC World Test Championship points have been deducted. The slow over-rate violation resulted in Pakistan being two overs short of the target, as per the assessment of match referee Javagal Srinath.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players face a fine of five percent of their match fee for each over not bowled within the allocated time. Additionally, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions dictates a deduction of one point for every over short. Pakistan captain Shan Masood accepted the charges, and no formal hearing was required.
PAK VS AUS 1st Test: Pakistan suffer 360-run defeat at Perth
In the first Test of the three-match series in Perth, Pakistan suffered a comprehensive 360-run defeat at the hands of Australia. Chasing a challenging total of 450, Pakistan was bowled out for just 89 in the final innings. Apart from the two World Test Championship points deduction, Pakistan players were also fined 10 percent of their match fee due to the slow over-rate violation.
The slow over-rate has impacted Pakistan’s standing in the World Test Championship 2023-25. After being at the top of the points table following a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka in 2023, Pakistan slipped to the second spot due to their defeat in Perth. The team’s percentage of points dropped from 66.67 to 61.11, allowing India to take the lead in the table. India had started their World Test Championship cycle with a 2-0 victory over the West Indies in July-August.
