Sourav Ganguly, the ex-president of the BCCI and a former captain of India, has made a shocking revelation about Virat Kohli’s captaincy resignation after India’s humiliating loss to Australia. According to Ganguly, the board never wanted Kohli to give up his position as captain in red-ball cricket because it was a personal choice.
Virat Kohli’s prior position as captain of the Test team has been called into question in the wake of India’s devastating defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship Final. During his tenure, Kohli was one of the best captains in the game’s longest format and controversially left his post in 2022.

Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India and BCCI president at the time of Kohli’s departure, said that the board was not involved in the choice. According to Ganguly, they were unprepared for Kohli’s resignation and had to choose Rohit Sharma as the all-format captain because he was the best option available.
“BCCI was not ready for Virat Kohli to step down as Test captain. We weren’t expecting it either following the South Africa visit. The reason Virat Kohli resigned as captain is only known to him. Given that Virat Kohli is no longer the Test captain, there is no purpose in discussing this at this time. An India captain has to be chosen by the selectors. And Rohit was the best option at that time,” Sourav Ganguly told Aaj Tak in an exclusive interview.
Virat Kohli’s decision came after rumours of a rift between the player and the board
For those who are unaware, Virat Kohli made the announcement prior to the 2021 T20 World Cup that he will no longer serve as the captain of the shortest version of the game. The batting prodigy was later relieved of his ODI captaincy responsibilities as a result of his choice, and there were allegations that there had been a falling out between the board and the former skipper.
The cricketer from Delhi was miffed to learn that he had received a routine phone call informing him of his dismissal from the ODI duty. In response to India’s devastating series loss on the tour of South Africa in January 2022, Kohli resigned as captain of the longest version of the game.
