NZ VS SL 2nd Test: Kane Williamson with his 28th ton in Tests equals Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag’s record

Kane Williamson has scripted history in the ongoing second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. After playing a match-winning knock of 121 in the first Test, the former Kiwi skipper has continued his blistering form in the second Test as well.

Coming to bat at No. 3 on Day 1, Williamson amassed a massive 363-run stand with Henry Nicholls. Both the batsmen completed their hundreds- Williamson got to his 28th Test ton, and Nicholls scored his 9th century in the process, and on Day 2 Kane Williamson furthered his score to complete a record 6th double ton in international Test cricket.

The Tauranga-born batter got out while trying to up the ante in the third and final session of the day’s play. Williamson tried to hit spinner Prabath Jayasuriya down the ground, but holed out to substitute fielder Ramesh Mendis at long on.

Williamson ended up scoring 215 runs off 296 balls with the help of 23 fours and two sixes. The fact that he played at a strike-rate of 72.63 showed how fluent he was during his knock.

With his 6th double hundred Williamson also equalled Marvan Atapattu, Virender Sehwag, Javed Miandad, Younis Khan, Ricky Ponting and Javed Miandad in the list of most double hundreds in Test cricket.

The record of the most double hundreds in Tests is being held by the legendary Don Bradman, who finished his career with 12 200 plus scores in his career from only 52 matches.

The right-handed batsman has been in stunning form in Tests in recent weeks. In December, he ended his two-year long century drought with an unbeaten double century against Pakistan in Karachi. It was his first century in Tests since January 2021.

While the match would not have any impact when it comes to the equation of The World Test Championship finals, the continuous flow of runs by Williamson has come as a spectacle for cricket fans across the globe. The cricket fraternity was all-praise for Williamson as he held his nerves and steered NZ home in the 1st Test, have been hailing him in the continuum.
