Novak Djokovic-led PTPA calls Madrid Open Women’s Doubles final fiasco ‘inexcusable’

The Djokovic-led Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has criticized the Madrid Open Women’s Doubles final incident that saw players not given the opportunity to address the crowd.

The PTPA Executive Director stated that the whole situation was “inexcusable” and that the “entire tennis establishment dropped the ball” by not addressing and correcting the decision to silence the players.

No comment from the Madrid Open

The incident received criticism as all the finals, except the women’s doubles, featured players addressing the crowd. Despite calls to address the situation, the Madrid Open declined to comment, choosing to opt for a “no comment” route.

The Djokovic-led PTPA, however, condemned the incident, and it was the first organization to do so, even before the ATP or the WTA. The Executive Director of the PTPA stated that “any interference with this is inexcusable.” The incident was a terrible look for the event and the Tour, and the PTPA called out the entire tennis establishment for not addressing and correcting the inexplicable decision to silence the players.

So far, neither the WTA nor the ATP has commented on the matter, leaving the PTPA to lead the charge in condemning the situation. Players such as Pegula were asked about the incident in Rome, and she expressed her disappointment, stating that she wished they could have handled it in a more mature, professional way. She added that these problems cannot happen again and that changes must be made, promising to have that conversation with them.

The importance of players’ voices

The incident at the Madrid Open Women’s Doubles final highlights the importance of players’ voices being heard and the need for better communication and decision-making in the tennis industry. The PTPA’s condemnation of the situation indicates a willingness to stand up for players’ rights and to address issues that arise within the sport.

The PTPA’s strong condemnation of the Madrid Open Women’s Doubles final incident highlights the importance of players’ voices in the tennis industry. The incident received criticism from players and fans alike, and the PTPA’s leadership in condemning the situation demonstrates their commitment to improving the sport for all players.
