Nottingham Forest sign Argentina’s World Cup winner from Sevilla

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Sevilla defender Gonzalo Montiel. The right-back joins Steve Cooper’s side on an initial loan deal which could become permanent for a reported fee of €11 million.

Furthermore, Gonzalo Montiel helped clinch Argentina’s World Cup victory over France by scoring the winning penalty in last December’s memorable final.

Despite signing a whopping 30 players last season, Steve Cooper’s side have continued to dip into the market for fresh faces. They have already signed Chris Wood, Ola Aina, Anthony Elanga and Matt Turner this summer.

However, despite signing 30 players last season, they faced a relegation battle. But Forest did well to survive relegation in their first season back in the Premier League last term.

So, this season, they will look to finish the season on a high after securing the services of World Cup winner. The 26-year-old will wear the no. 29 shirt with Nottingham Forest.

After signing for the Prem club Montiel said: “I’m really happy to have joined this club. I’m coming here full of expectations, of getting to play and showing what I can do. I’m also hungry to win things, to win trophies, now’s the time to show this.

“I’ve been watching the Premier League since I was child, I used to watch every game. As a player you want to play in the best league, and the Premier League is just that.”

Sevilla signed Montiel in 2021, since then, he has made 72 appearance for the Europa League winners. Moreover, he also scored the decisive penalty for Los Rojiblancos in their Europa League final triumph over Roma at the end of the previous campaign.

Although he is most known for his efforts with Argentina, his penalty against France sparked jubilant scenes from Lionel Messi and co. as they got their hands on the biggest prize of all.

Montiel could make his Forest debut in Sunday’s Premier League encounter away to Manchester United.
