Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has delivered a disappointing update to his fans and tennis enthusiasts around the world. Kyrgios, who reached the men’s singles final last year, losing to Novak Djokovic, has had a challenging year with injuries, limiting his tournament participation.

Kyrgios expresses disappointment and gratitude in social media post

Expressing his sadness over the situation, Kyrgios took to Instagram on Sunday evening to make the announcement. He revealed that he had torn a ligament in his wrist during his comeback efforts. Despite undergoing surgery and giving his all to be ready for Wimbledon, the pain in his wrist became apparent during the Mallorca tournament. As a precautionary measure, he underwent a scan, which confirmed the torn ligament.

In his Instagram post, Kyrgios expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from his fans throughout his career. He emphasized his determination to make a strong comeback, promising to return to the tennis court as soon as possible. The Australian player, seeded 30th in this year’s Wimbledon, was set to face Belgian David Goffin in the opening round, making his withdrawal a disappointment for fans eagerly anticipating his performance.

Wimbledon officials responded to Kyrgios’ announcement with a message on social media, wishing him a swift recovery. The tournament’s Twitter account expressed their regret over the news and conveyed hopes to see Kyrgios back on the iconic grass courts next year.

Injury-riddled season adds to Kyrgios’ challenges

This season has been a series of setbacks for Kyrgios, starting with his decision to withdraw from the Australian Open in January. The announcement came as a devastating blow, as he was unable to compete due to his knee injury. Following the withdrawal, he underwent surgery to address a cyst in his meniscus. Despite his best efforts, Kyrgios faced challenges upon his return to competitive action in June.

Kyrgios’ difficulties continued during his recent appearances. At the Stuttgart Open, he suffered a first-round loss to China’s Wu Yibing, battling movement issues throughout the match. The following week, he withdrew from the Halle Open.

Despite these setbacks, Kyrgios remained determined and continued to practice at the All England Club in preparation for Wimbledon. Prior to his withdrawal, he expressed cautious optimism about his physical condition, stating that his body felt “OK” after practice sets against fellow Australian Jordan Thompson and American Maxime Cressy.
