Nick Kyrgios Withdraws from US Open Citing Injury Woes

Australian tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming US Open due to persistent injury concerns, according to the tournament organizers. Kyrgios, known for his flamboyant style both on and off the court, has faced a series of unfortunate injuries throughout the year, severely limiting his playtime. His participation in the ATP Tour for 2023 has been sparse, with only one match under his belt.

Injury Woes Impacting Kyrgios’ Game

The 28-year-old athlete has been grappling with a series of injuries, rendering him unable to participate in prominent tournaments. A wrist injury kept him out of Wimbledon, while knee and foot ailments sidelined him during the Australian Open and the French Open respectively.

The repeated setbacks have had a profound impact on Kyrgios’ world rankings. His limited court time has led to a substantial slide down the rankings, plummeting 57 spots to his current position at 92.

The much-anticipated US Open is scheduled to unfold from August 28th to September 10th in New York. Unfortunately, Kyrgios will not be partaking in this grand event due to his ongoing physical issues.

Kyrgios’ career experienced a high point in 2022, with a remarkable journey that led him to his maiden Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon. His achievements culminated in a career-best world ranking of 11.

Struggles and Setbacks in 2023

The start of 2023 posed substantial challenges for Kyrgios. A knee injury just before the Australian Open compelled him to withdraw from the tournament, opting for surgery. His competitive return occurred during the Stuttgart Open in June, where his movement appeared hampered in a first-round defeat to China’s Wu Yibing.

The grass courts of Wimbledon beckoned Kyrgios, yet a wrist issue forced him to withdraw from the tournament he famously competed in a year earlier, losing to Novak Djokovic in the final. With this US Open withdrawal, Kyrgios is expected to slip further in the rankings and likely drop out of the top 100 when the rankings are updated.

Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany is another player who has decided to forgo participation in the 2023 tournament. Consequently, Argentine duo Diego Schwartzman and Facundo Diaz Acosta have been elevated to the main draw to take the places of Struff and Kyrgios.
