Neymar breaks Pele’s record to become Brazil’s all-time men’s top goal scorer

Neymar breaks Pele’s record to become Brazil’s all-time men’s top goal scorer during the 5-1 win against Bolivia in the World Cup Qualifiers.

The 31-year-old scored a brace to register his 79th goal in his 125th appearance for La Selecao. Furthermore, he eclipsed legendary footballer Pele (77 goals) as the nation’s top-scorer of all time.

Neymar did not have a great start, as he missed a penalty with a weak shot in the first half. However, he did not give up and scored a brilliant brace and provided an assist.

Pele’s record was meant to be broken as soon as Neymar equalled his tally against Croatia in the quarter-finals of the World Cup 2022.

Neymar breaks Pele’s record as Brazil thump Bolivia 5-1

Neymar was the centre of attention during this transfer window after he completed a shock move to Al Hilal from PSG. The Brazilian followed the footsteps of some of the big names in Europe to move to Saudi Arabia.

After his move to Al Hilal, many fans criticised Neymar’s decision to leave Europe, as he has 3-4 good years to play at an elite level.

Nevertheless, he has reminded every football fan that he still has that elite level even after moving to Saudi Arabia. Moreover, he has written history after breaking Pele’s record.

Furthermore, besides Neymar, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo also scored a brace and has an assist. Barcelona winger Raphinha, also showcased his talent by scoring one goal and assisting Neymar’s second.

What Neymar said after breaking the record

“I never imagined reaching this record. I want to say that I am not better player than Pele,” said Neymar after the game. “I always wanted to make my own story, write my name in the history of Brazilian football and the national team. And today I did that.”

“Congratulations, Neymar Jr, for surpassing the King in goals for the Brazilian National Team in official FIFA matches,” it said on social media. “Surely Pelé is applauding you today!”

The legendary goal scorer, who won three World Cups with Brazil, died from cancer Dec. 29 in Sao Paulo at the age of 82. He scored 77 goals between 1957 and 1971.

Brazil will face Peru next week in their final game of the September international break.
