Newcastle United knock Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup

Newcastle United knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup to secure a place in the fourth round after Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game.

So, with this loss against Newcastle, City’s hopes of winning a quadruple is over. The Magpies will now face last year’s Carabao Cup winners Manchester United in the fourth round.

Pep Guardiola already said in his press conference that he will rest his players and will use fringe players against the Magpies.

Even after leaving the likes of Erling Haaland, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden on the bench, City dominated the first half. The Magpies were lucky not to concede a goal after Julian Alvarez missed two good chances to take the lead.

In the second half, Eddie Howe brought Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, and things started to click as Joelinton dribbled past four players to create before squaring a pass to Isak, who scored in the 53rd minute.

Pep Guardiola also brought Foden and Doku after the second half, but they were unable to create any danger. Moreover, this was Man City’s second loss in the last 38 games in all competitions.

“It was a game of two halves for us,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. “First half was tough. I thought we didn’t play particularly well, but defended well in that first period because we didn’t have a lot of the ball.

“In the second half we were excellent in most aspects, defensively and offensively, we attacked really well and probably deserved to win in the end.”

City have won the Carabao Cup four times in a row between 2018 and 2021. But this was third year in a row that they were out of the competition this early.

As for Newcastle United, they lost the final last year to Manchester United and will now face them again in the fourth round.
