New York set to host the 2024 T20 World Cup games official announcement from ICC awaited

In a recent development, New York is set to host the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup games. ICC is set to announce a 34,000-seater pop-up facility about 30 miles east of New York City as one of the venues for the much-anticipated 2024 T20 World Cup co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies.

The facility will also host the highly anticipated India- Pakistan clash. The official announcement is set to come within months after talks between officials of New York City and the ICC fell through for the construction of a similar pop venue in Van Cortlandt Park in the borough of Bronx.

New Facility

The city officials were compelled to drop the plans for Bronx after some heavy resistance from some of the locals residing around the park and one of the cricket leagues that is based out of the same park. Bronx’s loss was Nassau County’s gain as the ICC proved to be quick on its feet to materialize negotiations with the Nassau County officials, the administrators of Eisenhower Park.

The Market

This will be the third cricket venue in the USA with world-class facilities after Miami and Dallas where a 15,000-seater facility was built for the inaugural season of MLC. As things stand the 20 games given to the USA will be played at the three venues. USA is seen as a potential market for cricket as it has one of the biggest media markets in the world which is evident by the fact that the rights for ICC events in the American market is among the top four in terms of dollar values

The ICC earlier announced the 20-team World Cup will commence on June 4 and conclude on June 30. With the second edition of the MLC tentatively scheduled in July, there is every possibility the MLC may sweep in to leverage the newly laid infrastructure at Eisenhower Park and make the park the new temporary home for the MI New York.

Another MLC venue, the Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina is also believed to be in contention to host a few World Cup games. The facility, however, is devoid of any permanent structure or practice facilities.
