MS Dhoni’s availability for IPL opener in doubt due to knee injury

Chennai Super Kings are likely to take the field without skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the Indian Premier League opener against Gujarat Titans due to his left knee injury.

The 41-year-old Dhoni has been struggling with his left knee over the last few days. During the intra-squad practice match on Monday, he was initially hesitant to bat and was seen seated with a knee cap.

Dhoni eventually came out to bat but was seen limping every time he pushed for a two, even pausing midway before limping to the crease. He did not keep wicket during that evening.

Uncertainty Looms Over Dhoni’s Availability

Although Dhoni attended the practice session on the eve of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, he did not bat in the nets on Thursday. He was involved in a long discussion with Gujarat Titans mentor Gary Kirsten, with whom he won the 2011 50-over World Cup.

It is understood that Dhoni is still feeling some discomfort and does not want to push too much as the team is short on wicketkeeping options. A call on his availability is expected to be taken only on Friday, but chances of his inclusion remain bleak.

Potential Replacements for Dhoni

In case Dhoni is not available for Friday’s match, it would be interesting to see who captains the side. Ben Stokes, seen as a successor, is nursing a niggle himself, and CSK could be looking at either Ravindra Jadeja or Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead the team.

With no regular wicketkeeper in the mix, Chennai would be looking at Devon Conway to take the gloves, and in case the Kiwi opener does not start the game, one of Gaikwad or Ambati Rayudu will keep wicket.

Chennai believes that with a few days’ rest, Dhoni would be able to take the field, especially for their first home match against Lucknow Supergiants on Monday. However, if the niggle worsens, Chennai would be forced to change their combination, especially overseas imports with an eye on a reliable wicketkeeper.

Impact of Dhoni’s Absence

Dhoni’s absence would be a huge blow to Chennai Super Kings, who have a wealth of experience with the veteran skipper at the helm. He has been instrumental in CSK’s success over the years and has led the team to three IPL titles.

Dhoni’s fans and cricket lovers would hope that he recovers soon and takes the field for Chennai in the upcoming games.
